Pair of Mid-Century Model 515/F Bentwood Armchairs by Oswald Haerdtl For Thonet
Rare Pair of Mid-Century Model 515/F Bentwood Armchairs by Oswald Haerdtl for TON / Thonet – 1950s
An exceptional and highly collectible pair of Model 515/F Bentwood Armchairs, designed by the celebrated Austrian architect and modernist Oswald Haerdtl in the mid-1950s. Manufactured by TON (formerly the Czechoslovakian arm of the iconic Thonet empire), this particular armchair variant is a remarkably scarce find compared to the more common armless side chairs or the standard Model 1515.
Boasting a masterful display of mid-century organic design, these chairs combine striking, sculptural silhouettes with everyday functional comfort, making them a standout addition to any modern interior, study, or dining space.
Design & Features
- The Silhouette: Features Haerdtl’s signature continuous-mold plywood backrest. Unlike the standard models, the 515/F presents a solid, beautifully flared back shell that highlights the rich, uninterrupted flow of the wood grain.
- Sculptural Armrests: The defining feature of this rare model—stunning, deep-looping bentwood armrests that swoop seamlessly around the seat pan and affix elegantly to the outer edges of the backrest.
- Stunning Contrast: Rested upon sleek, black tapered legs that provide a sharp, dramatic contrast to the warm timber tones of the upper frames.
Condition & Upholstery
This pair has been meticulously restored and professionally refinished to celebrate the natural character wear and patina of the timber. The drop-in seat pads have been newly upholstered in a premium, historically sympathetic mustard-yellow textile that offers a vivid pop of color, perfectly complementing the rich wood tones and black legs. The frames are structurally excellent, tight at the joints, and ready for immediate residential or commercial use.
